Frequently asked questions
Do I need the app to follow these guides?
No. The recording tips, the loudness explanations and the comparison of noise tools apply to any phone, app or desktop audio editor. Only the step-by-step cleaning guide is written around Noise Remover, an Android app that removes background noise on the phone, offline, with no account and no upload.
Which noises can a phone app remove?
A speech-trained noise remover such as the one in Noise Remover handles steady and outdoor noise well (fans, air conditioning, hum, hiss, traffic, wind, rain) and turns keyboard clicks down too. It does not remove other voices, songs with vocals or room echo, which all sound like speech to it. Remove background noise has a page for each noise.
Where do the figures in the guides come from?
From our own lab test of RNNoise, the engine Noise Remover runs: clean speech mixed with synthetic noises at four levels, cleaned at full intensity and scored on a computer. They are directions, not guarantees for every recording, and the method is published on how it works. Loudness targets come from the standards and the platforms’ own guidance.
